Common cleaning mistakes can totally sabotage your efforts in keeping a place tidy and disinfected. With a lot of cleaners though, we have our habits. We get so used to doing things a certain way that we can go on auto-pilot and not question or realize that something very miniscule’s making things less clean. Here are a few of the cleaning habits a lot of people have that are making our cleans a little less effective.

Using The Same Cloth

For the sake of time, some cleaners use the same microfiber cloth or rag in every room. They shouldn’t. A cloth for every room. This limits germ spreading between areas. Color-coded cloth can be a nice reminder of this.

Cleaning The Toilet Incorrectly

The toilet is no doubt one of the most important areas to clean. Clean in the toilet bowl, wipe down the toilet seat, and spray and wipe the toilet flush button or handle. This doesn’t take long but a lot of people rush through cleaning the toilet and often miss the toilet flush handle – a breeding area of germs.

Too Much Laundry Detergent

If you work in a hotel, gym, hospital, or similar environment where materials need to be washed regularly, never use more laundry detergent than you need to. Going above the indicated amount is not going to equate to cleaner clothes. In fact, too much soap will make materials feel greasy and less clean. If there’s a stain or an issue, fix it before tossing everything together in a washer.

You Spend Lots On Fancy Cleaners

You don’t need lots of fancy cleaners to do a basic or even advanced clean. You can do a lot with bicarbonate soda, white vinegar, and castile soap. There are also lots of commercial cleaning supplies you can buy in bulk that can save a ton if you’re doing regular cleans on premises.

We Don’t Dust Enough

Dusting is an important part of a cleaning routine. Dust indicates a lack of cleanliness. You may not notice dust in your immediate foreground but look up. You probably have dust on a ceiling fan, light fixture, or anything up high that you may not normally get to in your day-to-day cleaning. Make it a point to identify problem areas for dust.

You Aren’t Emptying The Vacuum Enough

Think of all the stuff a vacuum is picking up. You should always empty it when done vacuuming. Leaving all those particles inside the vacuum will result in mold, pests, and possibly smells. Ensure everything’s cleared out of it as soon as you are done and make sure you clean those filters as well.

You’re Using Too Much Cleaner

If you use too much chemical cleaner, those chemicals have a tendency to stay on surfaces and in the air long after we are done cleaner. The key is to use just enough.

You Are Mopping With Boiling Water

Hot, hot water is bad to mop with. Don’t use scalding hot water. Warm water is fine. Cold water’s also fine. Hot water evaporates quicker and could damage the surface of the floor. This is why every cleaner should be aware of the temperature they are applying to the floor.

You Aren’t Steam Cleaning Enough

Steam is a powerful cleaning weapon. Just as powerful as some chemicals, in fact. Although steam doesn’t work on hardwood, it can be used on things like stainless steel appliances and many fabrics. It can allow you to listen stains or material that would normally require lots of scrubbing to get rid of. Handheld steam cleaners can prove to be a major asset to any cleaner.

Not Wiping Down Counters Enough

Dirty counters where there is debris left from food are going to attract insects and it plain doesn’t look great. Though wiping countertops in the kitchen and dining room and/or anywhere we eat can be time-consuming, it’s necessary to getting the day off on the right foot.

Not Cleaning Your Cleaning Tools

As a cleaner, you may not realize how much of a mess you’re making on the tools you’re using. Everything from brushes to rags and cloths have to be adequately cleaned on a routine basis, preventing the spread of bacteria from one place to the next.
