Common Cleaning Mistakes that actually make your Office Dirtier Cleaning can be a very therapeutic process, cleansing a commercial space of its dirt and bacteria, and getting it ready for another day on the job.

Although it’s a priority for a lot of office spaces, there are some common cleaning mistakes made that can actually make things way dirtier. Thankfully, we’ve put together some fixes for some of these cleaning mistakes. Here we go!

Using a feather duster

Feather dusters are a misleading commercial cleaning tool as they claim to clean when all they really do is spread the dust around. Using a feather duster, you’re not removing dust – you’re just knocking it to the floor. The easiest fix is to use a microfiber cloth or disposable paper towel mixed with the right cleaning solution. That’ll help take care of and remove dust from a surface.

Using the same cleaning rag

Although a sponge, rag, or cloth may be soaked and stained in cleaning solution, when it’s used around the office, it tends to spread grime from one surface to the next. If you’re working in a particularly dirty workspace, you may want to have different cloths for different rooms. No matter what, ensure you have a dedicated cloth for the bathroom. You don’t want those germs spreading across kitchen counters, desks, and windows. For this reason, using paper towel in some instances can cut down on the spread of germs. A microfiber cleaning cloth for each room is sometimes recommended though this can be costly.

 Not cleaning the vacuum

Especially in a commercial space, a vacuum filter needs to be changed out and the compartment cleaned frequently. A vacuum can miss picking up a lot of dirt and dust when its suction is decreased from beign clogged. The best thing to do if you’re not regularly cleaning out your vacuum is to begin changing or emptying your vacuum canisters or bags as soon as they become full. Be sure to give any attachments, hoses, or vents a quick wipe with a microfiber cleaning cloth, ensuring your vacuum’s performance will be optimized.

Forgetting about a dirty toilet brush

A toilet brush sitting in its holder after use gathers moisture and germs in a location where they can easily multiply. Then, every time you use the brush, you’ll be pushing these germs back into the toilet. The best thing to do with a toilet brush is to ensure it is dry before returning it into storage, and/or to ensure it’s being soaked on occasion in some soap and water.

Using the dishwasher for all kitchen tools

Thankfully, in a commercial space, you’re likely not seeing a whole lot of diversity in kitchen tools. For those that are, it’s important to remember a dishwasher is not so great at cleaning smaller kitchen tools like cheese grater or presses. As food is left in these tools, it becomes moldy and eventually smelly. The best thing to do with these sorts of things is to soak them in the day and then, remove them and wash them in the evening. That way, you’ll be able to clear out all the gunk then and there before it gets problematic.
